Cades Schutte attorneys supported and participated in the state court system’s Access to Justice Program, by staffing the Access to Justice Room (ATJR) at the District Court main courthouse for the month of May 2021.
The ATJR was started in 2012 as a way of allowing attorneys to provide pro bono services to self-represented litigants in the Honolulu District Court. Issues typically involve landlord-tenant issues, collections, and restraining order questions. Although the engagements are short, they can be crucial for people who face potentially crushing personal problems, have no idea how to navigate the legal system to address those problems, and cannot afford an attorney. Cades Schutte has been staffing the ATJR for a month per year since the program began.
“We are honored to have been able to participate in the Access to Justice Program again this year,” said Trever K. Asam, Cades Schutte’s Pro Bono Coordinator. “The past year has been full of many struggles and legal challenges due to the pandemic, and many people in Hawai‘i are especially in need of our services now. We hope that we made a difference to the many people that utilized the Program.”
