Daniel C. Vermillion, partner in Cades Schutte LLP’s Trusts & Estates practice, was honored at the 2024 Pro Bono Celebration by Volunteer Legal Services Hawai‘i (VLSH). This recognition highlights Dan’s remarkable dedication to providing free legal services to some of Hawai‘i’s most vulnerable communities.
Through VLSH, Daniel has committed over 430 hours of pro bono service. His contributions have been instrumental at Neighborhood Legal Advice and Counsel clinics, pop-up events, and through direct representation in guardianship matters—critical services for low- and moderate-income individuals in urgent need of estate planning assistance.
Dan’s commitment has not wavered, even amid challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing recovery efforts from the 2023 Maui wildfires. While VLSH typically requests volunteer attorneys to provide just 45 minutes of advice per client, Dan consistently goes beyond. At one recent clinic, he took on full representation for all four of his scheduled clients, providing comprehensive support that far exceeded initial expectations.
Estate law, particularly for low-income clients, is an area in high demand yet often difficult to find volunteer attorneys. Dan is one of the few legal professionals who consistently steps up, offering not just advice but lasting solutions. His dedication has made a tangible impact on the lives of many, helping families secure their futures during uncertain times.
In addition to his pro bono work, Dan’s leadership extends to the wider legal community. He recently established the Hawai‘i alumni chapter for the University of California College of Law, San Francisco, and serves as Vice President of the Hawai‘i Estate Planning Council.
We congratulate Dan on this well-deserved recognition and commend him for his ongoing service to our community.
