HONOLULU (September 30, 2020)–Cades Schutte LLP is proud to announce that partner Jeffrey S. Portnoy was elected to Hawai‘i’s Judicial Selection Commission and 2021 Hawai‘i Chapter President for the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).

The Judicial Selection Commission is made up of nine members, with no more than four licensed attorneys serving at a time, who are responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications for all of the State’s judicial vacancies and voting to select qualified nominees. Members serve a staggered six-year term.

ABOTA is a national invitation-only organization established in 1958 and made up of experienced trial lawyers and judges, with over 7,600 members nationally, dedicated to preserving and promoting the civil jury trial right provided by the Seventh Amendment of the US Constitution. Members must have at least five years of active experience as a trial lawyer, in addition to trying at least 10 civil jury trials. As President, Jeff will also serve as Hawai‘i’s National Board Representative.

Formerly Chair of Cades Schutte’s litigation department, Jeff has been practicing law as a civil litigator at the firm since 1972. He has extensive litigation and alternative dispute resolution experience in several areas of substantive law, including insurance, employment, mass tort, product liability, media, securities, and medical and legal professional errors and omissions.

“It is an honor to have been elected and have an opportunity to contribute to these prominent organizations in Hawai‘i,” Jeff said.

In addition to these positions, Jeff is currently serving as Treasurer for the Ninth Judicial Circuit Historical Society. He has served on several other prominent Board positions including as past President of both the Hawai‘i State Bar Association and Hawai‘i Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, former vice chair of the University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents, and as Hawai‘i’s representative to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Advisory Board.
